Posted in reviewku: plunder, middle grade, reviewku: poetry (all)

I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHERE I CAME FROM

Searching, obsessing,

questioning everything. Why

won’t anyone talk?

Nitty Gritty:

Middle grade / YA (ages 11 and up)

Verse Novel

First person POV

Main character – 14 year old Lizzie

Emotional turmoil of being adopted child

Inner journey towards answers to the following — who am I? how do I find out more about me? how do I find out about my birth family without hurting this family?

Themes – adoption, birth mother search, self-absorbed teen years, melodrama, angst

Poetic form = free verse with occasional forays into specific forms

Epilogue / authors note (“Guide to Poetics”) explains other forms

Forms are well done, but occasionally feel forced – perhaps the author is trying too hard to create a classroom reference/resource?

Will fixed forms and explanation of the same alienate potential readers?

Overall, effective emotional arc
