ONE OF THOSE HIDEOUS BOOKS WHERE THE MOTHER DIES by Sonya Sones

Posted in reviewku: plunder, young adult fiction, reviewku: poetry (all)

MY HOLLYWOOD DAD THINKS HE’S ALL THAT

Did she have to die?

And if so why do I have

to go live with him?

Nitty Gritty:

YA (ages 12 and up)

Verse novel

First person POV

Main character – 15 year old Ruby

Themes – mother’s death, new world, new family, new life

Setting – Hollywood

Movie star father

Name dropping – some real, some fictional – some smooth, some forced?

Teen angst exacerbated by Hollywood plastic expectations

Whining, complaining, caterwauling – (do I have to live with the rich and famous?  Why can’t I just go home?)

High levels of constant self-pity and egotistical worldview – solidly teenager-ish

Structure of book works well – emails mixed with poems balance in delivery and style, Overall good plot pace/flow
