Villanelle

Villanelle (Latin ‘villa’ = country house or farm — Originally, villians weren’t bad people, they were simply country farm boys) (Villanelle = old Italian love song with an accompanying dance)

6 stanzas — First five stanzas are three lines, last stanza is four lines.

First and last lines of Stanza 1 alternate as final lines of the next four stanzas, and return again for the final two lines of the poem.

Rhyme scheme – aba throughout with a slight variation in the final stanza.

Form: (A1&A2=fixed words from Lines 1 and 3, Stanza 1)

Stanza 1 – lines end with A1, b, A2

Stanza 2 – lines end with a, b, A1

Stanza 3 – lines end with a, b, A2

Stanza 4 – lines end with a, b, A1

Stanza 5 – lines end with a, b, A2

Stanza 6 – lines end with a, b, A1, A2

Can have a hypnotic, wave-like effect
