Three definitions:

1.  The rhythmic measure of a line of verse.

2.  The regular measure that a group of lines have in common despite variations.

3.  Way of measuring certain poems written in verse of lines (rather than prose).

Three elements that can be measured:

Accents

Number of syllables

Length of syllables

Also described as a “breath unit.”

Also described as a musical tempo.
