Metaphor

Metaphor (Ancient Greek – 2 words: meta=beyond, across, over; phoreo=to carry bring, bear)

A figure of speech equating one thing (X) to something very different (Y).

Can be expressed as:

1. X is like Y

2. X is Y

3. X of Y (i.e. Man of Steel)

4. XY (i.e. Girl rose or Rose girl) — this is called Kenning

Makes a strong and vivid statement and creates a mind picture with clever and unique comparisons.
