Alphabet Poetry

Alphabet Poetry (Invented by poet Paul West)

26 words (one for each letter of the alphabet in consecutive order)

Can cover a wide range of topics – i.e. Geography, sports, food, animals, etc…

For letters Q, X and Z, words that carry the sound of the letter may be used.

Variety of forms:

  1. Select a single letter and write about its appearance, images and ideas that occur when thinking about that letter
  2. Use letters Z-A or A-Z as first letters of the 26 words in the poem
  3. Every word in a line begins with the same letter (which causes alliteration!)
